Russia's Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev said that he is "strongly against" GMO technology and vowed to keep Russia's food market "ecologically clean", during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Wednesday. SOT, Alexander Tkachev, Russian Minister of Agriculture (Russian): "We are strongly against the introduction of technologies connected to GMO. I think that we have a chance to remain as a producer of ecologically clean goods that will play a greater role in the future. The US market and, for example, the Chinese market do not stand apart from using various chemicals and additives in pursuit of high yield harvests. This results in soil and foods deterioration. We have already started noticing how the demand for clean Russian foods is growing, especially in China and Asian world. I think that it is the future. Our goods will be highly demanded. And our main goal is to preserve it." SOT, Alexander Tkachev, Russian Minister of Agriculture (Russian): "We are currently introducing an electronic certificate and I believe this is absolutely right. Many countries use such standards of control. There are a lot of counterfeit and smuggled products on our market. Certificates will help to bring order, to understand the origin of goods and movement of goods and improve quality. The responsible producers will benefit from this. They all support this."
