1st Sunday of Advent: We are living in a time in which the zealous priest, parent and teacher resemble the heroic Fr. Thomas Conway and Marine Captain Edward Parke. These men swam nearly continuously for a number of days seeking to preserve as many of the USS Indianapolis shipwrecked sailors as possible. This huge ship went down very quickly in late July of 1945, leaving most of the survivors to float on the open ocean for four days before being rescued. Of the 900 that escaped the ship alive, only 316 sailors lived, thanks in a large part to the efforts of these two men, who died of exhaustion in their efforts. The navy men were harassed by sharks, extreme thirst in an ocean full of toxic water, and easily gave way to hallucinations leading them to take off their lifejackets. Today, the sharks (i.e., devils) tempt us to drink deeply of the waters (i.e., the alluring draughts of electronic media flowing from the movies, internet, radio, etc...
